The 86th Academy Awards!

The 86th Academy Awards was in 2014

*At the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood and Highland Center
*Honored movies that were released 2013




Ellen DeGeneres hosted the event.  It was her second by hosting, the first was in 2007.  The movie "12 Years a Slave" won three academy awards.  Steve McQueen became the first colored filmaker to direct the movie "12 Years a Slave" which won the oscar for best picture.  Also Alfonos Cuaron became the first latino to director to receive an award for directing.  Meryl Streep broke her record by having 18 nominations in the acting category.  The movie "Frozen" won for Animated Feature Film which was the first Walt Disney Animation Studios to win.  There were three honorary awards presented.  For cinematography Emmanuel Lubezki received an oscar for the movie "Gravity."  For costume design Catherine Martin received an oscar for the movie "The Great Gatsby."  For film editing Alfonso Cuaron and Mark Sanger received awards for the movie "Gravity."  Also for Foreign Language Film "The Great Beauty" won from Italy.

The 85th Academy Award!

The 85th Academy Award was in 2013

Seth MacFarlane hosted the event for the first time.  Guest apperances were Channing Tatum, Charlize Theron, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, William Shatner, Daniel Radcliffe and Sally Field.  The movie "Argo" won three academy awards.  Ang Lee a director won his second oscar for directing.  There was a tie with both "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Skyfall" for winning in sound editing.  Barbara Streisand sang at the oscars.  For cinematography Claudion Miranda won an award for the movie "Life of Pi."  For costume design Jacqueline Durran won an award for the movie "Anna Karenina." For film editing William Goldenberg won an award for the movie "Argo."  Also for Foreign Language Film "Amour" won from Austria.

The 84th Academy Award!

The 84th Academy Award was in 2012

*Honored movies that were released in 2011



Billy Crystal hosted this event.  It was his ninth time hosting the ceremony.  The movie "The Artist" won five academy awards.  "The Artist" was the first all black and white movie to win best picture since 1860.  It was the first time for Iran to win for Foreign Language Film.  Christopher Plummer became the oldest winner in the acting category who was 82, but the first was Gloria Stuart at the age of 87 for the movie "Titanic."  There were two honorary awards presented.  For cinematography Robert Richardson won an award for the movie "Hugo."  For costume design Mark Bridges won an award for the movie "The Artist."  For film editing Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall won awards for the movie "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo."  Also for Foreign Language Film "A Separation" won from Iran.

The 83rd Academy Award!

The 83rd Academy Award was in 2011

*Honored movies that were released in 2010



James Franco and Anne Hathaway were the hosts for the event.  It was the first time that a male and female duo hosted the ceremony.  James Franco also was nominated for his role in the movie "127 Hours" and it was the first time since 1973 that a host was also nominated.  It was the first time for all four winners in the acting categories to win.  "The King´s Speech" had won three Academy Awards.  Also "Inception" and "The King´s Speech" tied winning four Oscars.  There were three honorary awards given.  For cinematography Wally Pfister won for the movie "Inception."  For film editing Angus Wall and Kirk Baxter won for "The Social Network."  For makeup "The Wolfman" won by Rick Baker and Dave Elsey.  Also for Foreign Language Film "In a Better World" won from Denmark.

Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin were the hosts for the event.  It was the first time since 1967 that two people hosted the ceremony.  In the category for best picture there were 10 nominations instead of five.  The movie "The Hurt Locker" won six Academy Awards.  It was the first time for a woman to receive an oscar for directing, which was Kathyrn Bigelow and Barbara Streisand gave her the award.  In the acting category three out of the four winners were first time nominees.  There were three honorary awards presented. For cinematography Mauro Fiore won an award for the movie "Avatar." For costume design Sandy Powell received an award for "The Young Victoria."  For film editing Bob Murawski and Chris Innis won awards for the movie "The Hurt Locker."  Also for Foreign Language Film "The Secret in Their Eyes (El Secreto de Sus Ojos)" won from Argentina.

Hugh Jackmas was the host for the host for the event.  The movie "Slumdog Millionaire" won eight Oscars and was nominated in ten Academy Awards.  For "The Dark Knight" Heath Ledger won the Oscar for best supporting actor but because of his passing his mother, father and sister accepted his award.  The movie "Departures" won for Foreign Language Film and is said to be the first time that Japan had received an oscar since 1955.  "Samurai, The Legend of Musashi" was the movie that had received an award in 1955.  Paul Newman who had received an oscar for Best Actor died on September 26, 2008.  Also Sydney Pollack on May 26, 2008 a man who had won two oscars and was nominated several times died.  For costume design Michael O´Connor won for "The Duchess."  For cinematography Anthony Dod Mantle won for "Slumdog Millionaire."  Also for film editing Chris Dickens won for "Slumdog Millionaire."  For makeup Greg Cannom won for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."  Also writing (original screenplay) written by Dustin Lance Black won for "Milk."

Jon Stewart was the host for this event.  This year all the acting winners were not Americans.  The movie "No Country for Old Men" won four awards.  The four awards were best picture, best supporting actor, directing and writing.  It was the second time in the Academy Awards history that two people won the directing award, the first time was in 1961. For cinematography Robert Elswit won an award for the movie "There Will Be Blood."  For costume design Alexandra Byrne won an award for the movie "Elizabeth: The Golden Age."  For makeup Didier Lavergne and Jan Archibald won awards for the movie "La Vie en Rose."  For film editing Christopher Rouse won an award "The Bourne Ultimatum." Also for Foreign Language Film "The Counterfeiters" won for Austria.
