First Academy Award!

The First Academy Awards was in 1929

-On Thursday,  May 16

*In the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel
*Honored movies that were released from August 1, 1927 to August 1, 1928




Douglas Fairbanks the president of the Academy made all the official award presentations.  About 270 people went to the event, most of them were the Academy members.  The guests of the members were invited to come but charged $5 to their host.  There were 12 awards presented at the dinner and awards and honors were given to the runner-ups in each award category.  
 
                  (The Academy statuette was designed in 1928 by Cedric Gibbons)




Best Picture


"Wings"

-Only silent film to win the Academy Award in Best Picture 
-Also won for Engineering Effects 


Directing (Dramatic Picture)


"Frank Borzage"

-Best Director for "7 Heaven"

Directing (Comedy Picture)


"Lewis Milestone"

-For Director of "Two Arabian Knights"

Best Actress


"Janet Gaynor"

-Her work in three films

"7 Heaven," "Street Angel," and "Sunrise."

Best Actor 


"Emil Jannings"

-For his work in the "The Last Command," and "The Way of All Flesh"

Special Awards 

- To Charles Chaplin 

For acting, writing, directing and producing "The Circus"

-To Warner Bros., 

For producing "The Jazz Singer"
